I was just camping with a British Subject -- and he said the reason there is the Union Jack in the Hawaii State Flag was because the islands were once a British Protectorate. I'd never heard of that, and had been comfortable enough in my ignorance to just assume the quasi-jack was placed there related to the overthrow, or even Kalakaua's travels.
hmmm... further research is in my future!
